Calgary Imam claims radical Muslims in Canada use “Taqiyah”

Imam Syed Soharwardy is the founder of the Calgary-based Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and Muslims Against Terrorism. He is often invited by CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), Canada’s Public Broadcaster, as a guest expert to discuss issues related to terrorism and radicalization.

On March 17, 2018 Syed Soharwardy posted on Facebook the following:

I have never ever objected to any masjid regardless of sect or other affiliations. But why Wahabis and Deobandis threat, spread lies and rumours when we establish a Sunni Masjid? The local Wahabi and Deobandi Mullahs issue fatwas, make speeches and misinform public against us whenever and wherever we establish our mosque. We have never ever filed and complaints against any Wahabi Deobandi mosque but these Wahabis and Deobandis have always filed complaints against our mosques with full of lies and complete misinformation.

I faced this Wahabi and Deobandi rumours and opposition in every masjid that I helped in establishing across Canada.

I continually face their misinformation and lies every day. We are the victims of Wahabi Deobandi division and rumours. But when I expose them they again misguide public by blaming me to be sectarian. It’s shame.

I do not believe in Taqiyya but it is obvious Wahabis and Deobandis use Taqiyaah to the best of their evil abilities.

They did this to me in Calgary, British Columbia, Saskatoon, Toronto, Mississauga and now in Ajax when we established Sunni mosques.

Let me assure my Muslim brothers and sisters these Wahabis and Deobandis will burn in their own wrath and we will succeed, Insha Allah. Remain focus and do not get distracted by the evil of wrong doers. JazakAllah

According to Al-Islam.org, “Taqiyah is a Qur’anic term: it means permission of hiding one’s true faith, not for the sake of expediency, but when there is danger to one’s own life, property or honour or to that of another believer. This principle is initiated by Qur’an, was followed by many respectable Sahabah, and is accepted by all Muslims, Shi’as and Sunnis alike.”
